No, this isn’t a controversial review about Elvis…
This is a review about a love song written by ‘The Pretty Ugly’, a band consisting of a Trio from Yorkshire with an 80s inspired Alternative Indie Pop/Rock sound.
Spotify: Elvis, The Pretty Ugly
‘Elvis’, might make you feel a bit single if you aren’t in a relationship. It’s a ‘Grab your partner and dance in the kitchen ’kind of vibe. I’ll tell you why…
‘Elvis’, was originally only meant for two people, James Swift (Band Member) and his wife, it’s their ‘Theme Song’, describing their relationship in a soft, folky and loving way. Swift later decided to create a full version of their song for their wedding, officially releasing the single in October 2023 for others to appreciate.
If that’s not a romantic gesture, I don’t know what is!
This song is such an easy listen. Usually for a single that’s over 4 minutes, I would get bored, but with the captivating storytelling, chilled vibe and multi-instrumentalist Dan Cottam providing a build up of various perfect additions, you will happily be listening to this on repeat. I love how the end is so quiet, peaceful and really makes you think about the passion in their relationship.
Swift, presuming he wrote the entire song, is a lyrical genius, it’s hard to pick my favourite without writing the whole single…these are the ones I felt most drawn to:
“If I were Elvis, you’d be my rhythm and blues’.”
“...who’s soul you stole. It’s mine that you own…”
“You've totally invaded my mind, and all I ask is that you be patient with me…”
Wow… just wow! Have a listen and let us know what your favourite lyric of this song is!
‘Elvis’ channels a slightly different sound for ‘The Pretty Ugly’ in comparison to their previous Album, released in 2022, ‘Dancing in the Kitchen, With the Same Song in Our Minds’, which is a bit more upbeat and boppy! They’re genuinely one I’m looking forward to listening to more, and finding out if the vibe they used for ‘Elvis’ is one they’re going to continue.
